Kosher salt is naturally occurring, mined and processed from seawater. It is the only salt available that is certified as Certified Kosher by the Orthodox Union. This certification ensures that the salt meets strict purity and quality requirements, as set forth by the Union.

Kosher salt is all natural, no man-made chemical additives are used. It is graded based on its color, size, purity and relative composition. With all these grades, you know exactly what you are getting when you purchase kosher salt.

Sea salt can be used in cooking, baking and homemade soups. It adds a gentle flavor and color to sauces and gravies. Sea salt is also used in recipes for ice cream, ice tea and any other dessert recipe. When served chilled, it blends well with sweet desserts like cookies, cakes and pies.

Sea salt, like kosher salt, is mined from salt beds deep below the ocean surface, where the temperatures are much cooler than in the atmosphere. Sea salt is mined from deposits found underneath the ocean floor, where the temperature and pressure are much lower than the air.

Sea salt is collected in a variety of ways, which all varies the amount of minerals and essential elements found in it. There are three types of sea salt: pale, striped and spearmint. Sea salt will never be iodized and it is perfectly safe to eat.

Although not commercially available, some natural sea salts have been recognized by a nonprofit as organic salt, which is harvested from natural deposits and has less than two percent of lead and copper. Organic sea salt may be used to add taste and color to food, but it should never be used as table salt.

No matter what type of kosher salt you purchase, it should be used only within one year of purchase. If it is exposed to heat or if it is stored in containers that are too large for it, it will spoil. It should be stored in a cool, dry place and the best place to store it is in an airtight container.

We suggest purchasing sea salt from an organic farm, as this type of salt has less than 2 percent lead and copper and has minimal amounts of mercury and iodine. Certified organic salt can be used to make homemade borscht, soup or salad dressings. Be sure that the label affixed to the container says organic.

Sea salt can be used in more ways than you might think. You can use it as a seasoning for pork, fish and poultry dishes; for a garnish for your salads; or on your vegetables to add a healthy touch to your menu.

Most kosher salts contain calcium carbonate, magnesium, trace minerals, acidity regulating substances, phosphoric acid, trace oils, enzymes, vitamins, vitamins B, C and E, and other additives. The more ingredients there are, the higher the sodium content. And, most of the organic salts have the same or less sodium than traditional salt.

Kosher salt is a source of healthful and very good tasting food. It is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and people can experience healthful living with healthy salt.
